Se on tarina Kiinasta, nukkuvasta jättiläisestä, joka herää kansansa huutoihin – ja amerikkalaisista jotka jäävät sen verisen heräämisen jalkoihin.
Se on tarina Frencysta (Richard Attenborough), U.S.S. San Pablon miehistön jäsenestä, joka kidnappaa kiinalaisen vaimonsa huutokaupasta.
Ennen kaikkea se on tarina Jake Holmanista (Steve McQueen), merimiehestä joka on tehnyt päätöksen olla solmimatta rauhaa kenenkään kanssa – mukaanlukien itsensä.
